BLD Gawad Kalinga

“Sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless; clothing the naked when we see them, and not turning your back on your own”   (Is 58:7)

Gawad Kalinga (GK) translated in English means to “to give care”. What started in 1995 as a daring initiative by Couples for Christ to rehabilitate juvenile gang members and help out-of-school youth in Bagong Silang, Caloocan City, (then the biggest squatters’ relocation area in the Philippines) has now evolved into a movement for nation-building. GK’s vision for the Philippines is a slum-free, squatter-free nation through a simple strategy of providing land for the landless, homes for the homeless, food for the hungry and as a result providing dignity and peace for every Filipino.

Gawad Kalinga is more than just building houses for the poorest of the poor.  Providing a decent home is the beginning of the transformation of the people. It is about building thriving communties of love and hope, of empowering individuals in rediscovering their self-respect and dignity so as to help them realize their dreams for a brighter future - in the end, bringing to realization Christ's calling to "feed the hungry and to provide shelter for the homeless".

The BLD-Trenton GK Ministry has been in the forefront of this noble mission of addressing poverty in our country and has ongoing projects with the goal of building our first GK Village in Mauban, Quezon Province. In cooperation with ANCOP USA (the fundraising arm of GK) and with the local CFC community in Quezon (the community-building arm of GK), we are on the threshold of achieving our dreams of building a community for the poorest of poor in Barangay Liwayway, Mauban. We will embark on activities to raise funds so as to sustain this project as well as others in the near future.
